Listening to the Bible solves a real problem: it's not always possible to stop and read. In traffic, in the kitchen, while walking, doing repetitive work, or for those with visual impairments, audio is what makes daily reading possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What almost no list explains is that There are two very different types of "audio Bible".\u201c<\/strong>, And both are described with the same words in the store. This guide begins with this difference because it's what determines whether you'll be able to listen to an entire chapter or give up after the third verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recorded narration and reading via synthesizer.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recorded narration<\/strong> It's someone who read the text in a studio. They have intonation, rhythm, and pauses in the right places. In some versions, there's a soundtrack and different voices for each character\u2014what the store usually calls "dramatized" audio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading by synthesizer<\/strong> It's the phone itself reading the screen in an artificial voice, without intonation and pausing in the wrong place. It's good for looking up a verse; it's not good for following an entire book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to distinguish before installing: look in the app description on the store page to see if it... names the narrator<\/strong> Or it uses words like "human narration," "dramatized," or "voice-over." When the description only says "listen to the Bible" without any of that, it's usually a summary\u2014or the store simply doesn't provide that information, and then it's worth trying a chapter before deciding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to check if it's really free<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

More valuable than any advice we can give: on the app's page on Google Play, right below the name, the warnings appear. Contains advertisements<\/em> and In-app purchases<\/em>. When both are absent, there is no advertising or sales within the system. When they appear, you already know what to expect before installing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This information is provided by the store itself, not a promise from the person recommending it. All the apps below are described based on these notices, as of the day this text was written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SBB+ Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Published by United Bible Societies, the organization affiliated with the Brazilian Bible Society. It is the most direct of the six on the point that matters: the description states, in these words, that the audio Bible has... \u201c"a 100% human and smooth narration"\u201d<\/strong>. It also states that offline access applies to audio, not just text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It includes the ARC, ARA, NAA, and NTLH translations, as well as reading plans, devotionals, and maps. The information sheet does not display... Contains advertisements<\/em> neither In-app purchases<\/em>. There is mention of exclusive content for donors to the organization \u2014 which does not appear as a purchase option in the store.<\/p>\n\n\n

Spoken Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An app focused solely on audio, and the only one on the list that... Name the narrator on the character sheet itself.<\/strong>Corn\u00e9lio Augusto, pastor of Lagoinha. Provides audio of all chapters in the Almeida Revised and Updated translation, from the Brazilian Bible Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has a player with fast forward, rewind, and pause functions, plays in the background with other apps open, and offers accessibility for screen readers. The information sheet does not display... Contains advertisements<\/em> neither In-app purchases<\/em>, And it's listed as free in both stores \u2014 in the App Store the name has a suffix, \u201cSpoken Bible ARA\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two things the description doesn't answer, and which you should check within the app: whether the audio works offline and whether there's a Bible text for reading on the screen \u2014 the description only mentions the audio.<\/p>\n\n\n

Audio Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The short description on Play presents it as "Audio Bible narrated by Cid Moreira, free version," and the long description says that you can read and listen to chapters from the Old and New Testaments. even without internet<\/strong>. It's the only one on this list where the description itself promises that the audio works offline without any reservations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The card displays Contains advertisements<\/em> and does not display In-app purchases<\/em> In other words, you'll see advertising, but the store doesn't register any sales internally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One detail worth knowing: the App Store listing, from the same developer, describes the content as "original and original narrations," while the Play Store listing cites Cid Moreira's voice. These are different descriptions, so don't expect the same audio on both platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n

On the Brazilian Play Store, the app appears simply as "B\u00edblia" (Bible); on the App Store, as "B\u00edblia.is". The description mentions free access to more than 1,300 languages and "wonderfully dramatized" scriptures \u2014 dramatization refers to recorded narration with a live cast, not synthesized voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The form does not display Contains advertisements<\/em> neither In-app purchases<\/em>. It's worth noting, honestly, that the description doesn't specify Portuguese among the languages with audio, and there are reviews from Brazilians reporting that... Not all Portuguese versions have audio.<\/strong> Some versions have audio but not text. Check which version you're using before relying on it.<\/p>\n\n\n

For those who want to follow along by reading and listening at the same time, or who are learning to read, this significantly changes the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The form does not display Contains advertisements<\/em> neither In-app purchases<\/em>, The description states that the Portuguese audio is free and ad-free. However, the store doesn't specify who is narrating or if the voice is human\u2014unlike previous versions, this one lacks that information. We also couldn't find an equivalent version on the Brazilian App Store.<\/p>\n\n\n

JFA Offline Holy Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most comprehensive in terms of translation variety: the description lists ten versions in Portuguese \u2014 ACF, ARC, ARA, AEC, A21, NBV, NTLH, NAA, NVI, and NVT \u2014 all with audio synchronized to the text, and cites dramatized audios with the voice of Cid Moreira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, it is the only one of the six that exhibits... the two warnings<\/strong>: Contains advertisements<\/em> and In-app purchases<\/em>, with items listed ranging from R$ 9.90 to R$ 59.99. The store doesn't detail what each item unlocks, and the description only mentions the option to remove ads as a paid service\u2014so treat any unlocks as in-app purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two useful caveats. The name says "Offline," but the information sheet for the iPhone version, from the same developer, explains that... The audio needs to be downloaded first.<\/strong> To be used \u2014 it's not for listening without internet access immediately. And the dramatized audio mentioned in that same entry is from an English version, so don't assume a human voice in all ten translations.<\/p>\n\n\n

Which one to choose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  • Do you want the guarantee of a human voice?<\/strong> The SBB+ Bible or the Spoken Bible \u2014 these are the two versions where the information sheet directly states this.<\/li>\n
  • Want to listen offline?<\/strong> The SBB+ Bible and Audio Bible both claim that the audio works offline. With JFA Offline, the audio needs to be downloaded first.<\/li>\n
  • Would you like to follow along by reading along?<\/strong> The NIV highlights the verse while the audio plays.<\/li>\n
  • Do you have a choice between many translations?<\/strong> JFA Offline lists ten in Portuguese \u2014 accepting ads and in-app purchases.<\/li>\n
  • Want zero advertising?<\/strong> Four out of the six do not display the advertisement warning. The only one that displays both warnings is JFA Offline; the Audio Bible only displays the advertisement warning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    One precaution that is worthwhile for this matter.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Religious apps often circulate within church and family groups, and this is exploited. Never install APK files received via WhatsApp or Telegram, even if sent by someone you trust\u2014outside of the app store there is no verification whatsoever, and it's the most common way for fake apps to spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Also be wary of apps that request permissions that an audio player doesn't need, such as access to contacts, messages, or system files. And be wary of any donation request that doesn't clearly state which organization the money will go to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    There are good free, ad-free options for listening to the Bible in Portuguese, maintained by organizations that have been producing this audio for a long time. There's no need to pay or search for apps outside of the app store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
